Next Selangor MB may be sworn in soon after ruler's return from London

Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah this morning arrived from London, where he had been receiving medical treatment since last month.

According to a tweet by caretaker Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, he welcomed the sultan and his wife Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin upon their return.

“Alhamdulillah, Tuanku Sultan’s medical procedures had gone well. His Majesty also looked happy and healthy,” he said.

Amirudin’s social media post did not mention anything about whether a date has been set for the swearing-in ceremony for the next Selangor menteri besar.

However, it is believed that it will be held soon following Sultan Sharafuddin’s return.

Amirudin had been the caretaker menteri besar since the dissolution of the Selangor state legislative assembly on June 23 to make way for fresh state polls.

The Selangor state election held on Saturday saw the Pakatan Harapan-BN front having secured the majority to be able to form the next state government.

While it has yet to be confirmed if Amirudin will continue holding the state's top executive office, Harapan chairperson and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced last month that the Sungai Tua state assemblyperson will be retained.

A spokesperson from the Menteri Besar’s Office told Malaysiakini a day after the polls that the process to form the next state government can only start upon the Selangor ruler’s return from overseas.

Malaysiakini has reached out to the office again today to seek an update following Sultan Sharafuddin’s arrival this morning.

According to Bernama, Sultan Sharafuddin had been in London since July 28 for a surgery and treatment called holmium laser enucleation of the prostate.

Besides Selangor, five other states namely Kedah, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kelantan, and Terengganu also had their respective state elections on Saturday.

Of the five, Kedah, Penang, and Negeri Sembilan have held swearing-in ceremonies for their respective menteri besar and chief minister, while Kelantan and Terengganu are expected to have theirs later today. - Mkini
