The son of former PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has praised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for presiding over a religious conversion ceremony.
Urging all quarters not to “polemicise” the issue, Nik Omar (above) said there was no coercion involved with regard to the Hindu youth choosing to embrace Islam.
“This is a praiseworthy action (by Anwar),” he told Malaysiakini this evening. “This involves a servant of Allah who will receive great rewards…”
“What is most important is that there was no coercion, the desire (to become a Muslim) is born in each individual who wishes to return to ‘fitrah’ (what the divine intended),” he told Malaysiakini.
Earlier, Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (Perkim) leader Hushim Salleh said that he had asked Anwar to preside over the conversion ceremony at a mosque in Klang.
Yesterday, the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) said it was inappropriate for the prime minister to participate in the ceremony.
“As the nation’s leader, he should consider whether his actions align with the wellbeing of the entire population and the sentiments of people from all ethnic backgrounds.
“The prime minister’s open participation in the religious conversion and his posting of photos (of the ceremony) on social media have undoubtedly displayed a lack of religious sensitivity,” it said.
Others who questioned Anwar over this were former Penang deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy, former minister P Waythamoorthy and Global Human Rights Foundation president S Shashi Kumar.
Among others, Ramasamy pointed out that none of the prime minister’s predecessors had participated in such ceremonies. - Mkini
