PETALING JAYA: PAS’s Sukri Omar is hoping to fare better than he did at the 14th general election (GE14) when he battles for the Kota Anggerik state seat in Selangor this Saturday.
In 2018, Sukri came in third in a five-cornered fight for the Pandan parliamentary seat, pulling in 8,336 voters in the PKR stronghold. Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail won the seat with a landslide 52,543-vote majority.
This time, the Selangor PAS Youth chief is contesting in another PKR stronghold.
Kota Anggerik will witness a three-cornered fight between Sukri, Muda’s Azad Akbar and Pakatan Harapan’s Najwan Halimi who is defending the seat.
Sukri said he has learnt much from his participation at GE14 five years ago.
“My experience contesting against Wan Azizah in the 2018 polls was meaningful.
“It taught me to be more organised in strategising my campaign, especially when it comes to engaging with voters,” the Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate told FMT in Shah Alam recently.
Sukri also said he was better prepared this time round and has set up a social media team to woo voters.
He is banking on the support of frustrated Umno members who are dissatisfied with its decision to join forces with PH to form the unity government.
He said he had meetings recently with such people and believes it has increased his prospects of success.
“Swing votes will happen and we will see the wave of change in Selangor.” - FMT
