Review medical officers’ allowances, MMA urges govt

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has urged the health ministry to review allowances for medical officers to compensate for the rise in the cost of living.

“The cost of living, including the cost of transport, has gone up and this should be taken into consideration. Allowances should be reviewed accordingly,” MMA president Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai said in a statement.

Muruga hoped the e-house officer system, the government’s electronic system for permanent placements, would be improved and urged the ministry to consider MMA’s proposal of staggering placements by cohort.

“This will minimise the impact on healthcare services as a result of thousands of medical officers leaving for their placements in other states.”

Meanwhile, Muruga said he was grateful to the health ministry for approving transfer appeals of 332 medical officers who were required to report for duty on July 31.

Health minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the appeals were approved on June 27 and July 24 after reviewing applications from 1,843 of the 4,155 medical officers offered permanent positions.

He said the ministry’s understanding of the challenges doctors faced was greatly appreciated. - FMT
