Shoving video: PN’s Lunas candidate to sue media, others for defamation

STATE POLLS | Perikatan Nasional’s Lunas candidate Khairul Anuar Ramli will be taking legal action against several individuals and media publications for defamation after a video of him shoving a man made its rounds on social media.

Speaking to reporters in a press conference last night, Khairul (above) said he has instructed his lawyer to sue the aforementioned quarters as soon as possible and will be demanding RM10 million from each of them.

He asserted that he will not compromise on the matter, neither will he provide the space for any quarters to apologise.

“The viral video titled ‘PN’s Lunas state assembly candidate shoves elderly man’ is not accurate. The man in the video is not elderly, he is only four years older than me,” said the 42-year-old.

“I will also be suing several media publications that reported that the incident took place during the 15th general election campaigning period. That is not true. The incident took place three years ago.

“I will continue with the lawsuit, it’s too much! They have attacked my personality, brought down my, my family, and Bersatu’s dignity, and also the dignity of PN supporters,” he said at the Padang Serai district voting unit in Kedah last night.

This comes after a 19-second clip of Khairul shoving a man emerged on Tuesday and had since gone viral.

Khairul, who is also Kedah PN information chief, explained that the viral clip originated from an eight-minute-long video.

“It was made viral three years ago on social media and garnered up to four million views.

“The short clip does not portray the whole incident that took place. If they want to make it viral, why don’t they upload the entire video for the people to judge?

“The man came to look for help but he hurled foul words towards my wife, who was present at my office in Lunas during the incident. He also wanted to enter my office with his shoes on to take away items that were for the purpose of helping the people,” he claimed.

Elaborating on the matter, Khairul said the man in the clip had lodged a police report, adding that he was later charged in court under Section 334 of the Penal Code.

“I had to go through the court trial for 18 months but on March 28 this year, the court acquitted me of the charges.”

He also accused Pakatan Harapan-BN of spreading such clips to tarnish his reputation as a candidate in the Kedah state election.

“I like to advise them to campaign in a mature manner. Harapan and BN are doing this in hopes to garner votes. They are politically bankrupt.

“I’m not a bit worried about this viral clip, it has no effect on my winning chances in Lunas,” he said.

Khairul will be battling in a five-way tussle against Harapan candidate Shamsul Anuar Abdullah and three other independent candidates in Lunas. - Mkini
