Two Labuan narcotics cops remanded on corruption suspicion

The Labuan Magistrate's Court has granted a five-day remand order for two police personnel to facilitate an ongoing investigation into allegations of corruption.

Magistrate Kasyfurrahman Abang Ahmad issued the order on the duo, both aged 42, from the Labuan police district narcotics division after the MACC apprehended them around 3pm on Saturday at the commission’s Labuan office while they were providing their statements.

They were suspected of soliciting and receiving bribes totalling RM3,950 through a series of transactions.

The transactions were conducted via cash deposit machines and online platforms as an inducement to not take action against an individual in connection with a previous drug-related offence.

The transactions took place between September 2022 and March 2023, and the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

This provision carries a fine of at least 10 times the value of the bribe (whichever is higher), up to 20 years imprisonment, or both.
