PETALING JAYA: Newly reappointed Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar wants to shift “to third gear” now that he is leading the state for a second term.

Samsuri, who was first appointed menteri besar in 2018, was reappointed to lead the state government after Perikatan Nasional made a clean sweep of all 32 seats in last Saturday’s state polls.

Stating that he spent his first term rebuilding the state government’s structure, which he inherited from Barisan Nasional after the 14th general election, Samsuri said he wanted his second term to be marked by “more aggressive and speedy” implementation of policies.

“(This state government is a) continuation from the one formed five years ago. Of course, we have various challenges ahead of us,” he said at a press conference after he was sworn in earlier today.

“If in the previous term I drove the state government in the first gear, this time I’m not shifting into the second gear but am going straight to the third gear … because our state operations need to move faster.”

He said all state executive councillors, assemblymen and civil servants would be briefed on the change in the state government’s approach.

Samsuri also said he intended to continue cultivating a positive relationship with the federal government so as to effectively manage the overlaps in their jurisdictions.

“When we talk about shared powers (under the Federal Constitution), it implies sharing authority. How can we share if we don’t discuss (issues)?

“Therefore, there must be ongoing discussions and a close relationship between the state and federal governments.”

Samsuri, 53, the assemblyman for Ru Rendang, took his oath of office at 3.18pm before Terengganu’s Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin at Istana Syarqiyyah in Chendering, Kuala Terengganu.

He retained his Ru Rendang seat by defeating Pakatan Harapan’s Suhaimi Sulaiman with a 17,286-vote majority. Samsuri garnered 20,927 votes. - FMT
