The Tapah Islamic Religious Administrative Office has barred Malays from attending joget lambak (traditional dance performances) events organised by the Orang Asli villages of Batang Padang, Perak.
According to a letter dated Oct 5, the agency raised several concerns about the event, ranging from idolatry to the consumption of alcohol and fornication.
The office said that idol and deity worship at such events is punishable as an act of apostasy.
“Before the dance begins, the Orang Asli engage in idol worship and pray to their deceased ancestors, seeking permission for the smooth execution of the event.
“Such actions may be classified as apostasy under Section 13 of the Perak Syariah Criminal Enactment 1992,” the letter stated.
Malaysiakini confirmed with the office that the letter (above), which was posted on X, is authentic.
Booze and sex
Apart from apostasy, the letter also highlighted concerns about the presence of non-halal businesses in the event, such as the sale of alcoholic beverages.
It also alleged that the event may lead to improper behaviour such as attendees from both genders mingling freely – holding hands and hugging among those who are not mahram (not having blood ties).
“After the event, there is a fear of persetubuhan haram (fornication) and khalwat (close proximity) between men and women.
“These actions are offences under Section 48 of the Perak Syariah Criminal Enactment 1992 and Section 54 of the same law,” it added.
The letter concluded by urging the Orang Asli village chiefs (tok batin) to implement restrictions or screenings to prevent Malays from attending the event.
Malaysiakini has contacted the Perak Orang Asli Development Department and Orang Asli activists for a response.- Mkini
