PETALING JAYA

Police have recorded the statement of comedian Harith Iskander over a social media post which critics claim was offensive to Islam.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said Harith’s statement was taken on Wednesday, Bernama reported.

Harith had said in a Facebook post last week that his faith was shaken after seeing a menu advertising “Ham Sap Coffee” as it contained the word “ham”.

His comment followed the commotion over the sale of chicken ham and cheese sandwiches allegedly lacking halal certification at a convenience store at Universiti Malaya.

It was reported yesterday that the Islamic development department would also summon Harith over his post.

Razarudin said police had received 16 reports on the issue and that the case was being investigated under Sections 298 and 505 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He also said the authorities were still trying to locate another individual identified as Cecelia Yap Song, who is believed to be connected to the case.

He said the case was being investigated under the same laws as Harith’s.

Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Isa said Harith’s police report had been referred to the Johor police. - FMT
