Explosions heard after chemicals catch fire in Klang factory

The Selangor fire and rescue department said its team was greeted by a plume of orange smoke that stung the eyes when they arrived at the factory.

PETALING JAYA
Several explosions were heard after a chemical factory at the industrial area in Sungai Kapar Indah, Klang, caught fire this evening.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said they received a call at 4.45pm.

He said chemicals stored at the premises were believed to have caused the explosions.

“The factory building was damaged, as were the neighbouring factories,” he said in a statement, adding that no injuries or deaths had been reported.

The Selangor fire and rescue department said in a separate statement that it was informed of the incident at about 4.30pm.

It said a team, led by operations commander Zulkifli Abdul Samad, confirmed the presence of orange smoke that stung the eyes when they arrived at the factory.

A hazardous and toxic materials personnel team, which was also sent to the scene, found that the item that had caught fire was recycled acid.

“A tanker lorry was destroyed by the explosion and fire,” the department said. - FMT
