Sekretariat Gerak Gempur Media Sosial Rakyat (SGGMSR) lodged a police report today against two individuals, including a Selangor assemblyperson, for uploading defamatory posts against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The NGO spokesperson Shahbudin Embun said the posts claimed that Anwar supported activist Iswardy Morni who was convicted of sedition and insulting the Yang-di Pertuan Agong on Dec 30.
"These people are poisoning the people's minds and what happened is that the posts have gone viral and have been seen not just in Malaysia but all over the world.
"This is a crime under the Defamation Act, under the MCMC Act. The government has had enough of tolerating these people," he said when met at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today.
Shahbudin said this is not the first time the two individuals had issued defamatory statements against the prime minister on social media, including unsubstantiated allegations about investments that allegedly involved bribery and personal interests.
Shahbudin also described their statements as an attempt to sabotage and tarnish the reputation of the prime minister and the government.
Dang Wangi district police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman confirmed receiving the report.
