Ismail Sabri Yaakob was initially scheduled to provide a statement at MACC’s headquarters on March 5 and later on March 7, but both appointments were postponed.

PETALING JAYA
Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is expected to give his statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Thursday, says its chief commissioner Azam Baki.

Azam said the Bera MP’s medical leave ends tomorrow and, to his knowledge, Ismail’s illness is not serious.

“If he does not appear at the office on Thursday, we need to know the reason for his absence,” New Straits Times quoted him as saying.

Ismail collapsed at home on Feb 22 and was hospitalised for blood pressure-related problems.

He was initially scheduled to provide his statement at MACC’s headquarters in Putrajaya on March 5, but it was postponed.

A later appointment on March 7 was also postponed after he submitted another medical certificate.

Last Friday, MACC officials interviewed the doctor treating Ismail to determine his health condition and whether it was serious enough to warrant the consecutive medical certificates.

An MACC source previously told FMT that Ismail’s medical certificate runs until March 12, and he would be questioned on March 13.

Ismail is being called in as a suspect in the investigation into four senior officers linked to him.

MACC said about RM170 million in cash and 16kg of gold bars worth millions of ringgit had been seized in raids conducted at the residences of the four officers and three other premises believed to be “safe houses”.

Azam said MACC had recorded statements from another 23 witnesses, adding to the 31 who were questioned earlier. - FMT
