Speaking to reporters at an event here, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said MCMC’s investigation papers will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) soon.
Fahmi said the investigations into Sin Chew Daily and Kwong Wah Yit Poh were carried out by three bodies – the home ministry, MCMC and the police – after the two news outlets published the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon.
“MCMC conducted its investigation under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (for improper use of network facilities), and the probe papers will be sent to the DPP for their consideration and advice,” he said.
Fahmi said he had no information on the status of the investigations carried out by the home ministry and the police, who are investigating the incident under the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.
Sin Chew Daily has apologised for wrongly depicting the Jalur Gemilang on the front page of Tuesday’s edition of its newspaper. Its chief editor and deputy chief sub-editor have been suspended amid a police probe.
The duo, who were questioned by the police for three hours yesterday, were detained before being released on bail.
The home ministry and MCMC also said they are probing Kwong Wah Yit Poh after it published the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon in a Facebook post showing the front page of its evening edition on Tuesday.
The home ministry has said that publishing the Jalur Gemilang without the crescent moon – which represents the position of Islam as the religion of the federation – is a serious oversight.
In a statement on Wednesday, the home ministry said such acts reflect a lapse in professional standards, adding that it could also provoke disharmony among the country’s multiracial society. - FMT
