Highway toll payments: A future of choice and convenience

Letter to Editor

THERE has been much discussion about highway toll payments and the perception that motorists have limited options. This view is misplaced.

Today, highway users already enjoy several methods of payment, including Touch ’n Go cards, SmartTAGs, RFID linked to e-wallets, as well as credit and debit cards.

These systems have reliably served millions while easing congestion at toll plazas. New features such as PayDirect are being introduced not to replace existing methods but to expand the choices available.

The next stage in this modernisation will be the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, confirmed by the government and set to be piloted by PLUS on part of its northern highway stretch.

With ANPR, vehicles will be identified seamlessly by their number plates, eliminating the need for cards or devices at toll gates.

More importantly, ANPR will open the door to a variety of payment channels—again, debit and credit cards, online banking, e-wallets, and future digital platforms, including through one single application.

According to reports, this will be an industry-led solution, better attuned to existing infrastructure and less disruptive when rolled out nationwide.

The importance of choice cannot be overstated. If one payment method fails or is impeded for whatever reason, it is indispensable that road users have other options to fall back on. This is non-negotiable for any piece of infrastructure of national importance—including highways.

It is inexplicable therefore that some feel that there isn’t already a plethora of options for users. There already is, and they will only grow, and this will be a good thing for the rakyat.

Toll operators should continue investing in innovative systems that leverage the latest technology and global best practices.

Above all, the priority must be to provide motorists with options, efficiency, and time savings. These upgrades are timely and necessary to keep Malaysia’s highways future-ready. ‒  Focus Malaysia
