
KULIM: A total of 225 residents from 66 families have been evacuated to two temporary flood relief centres (PPS) after floods inundated nine villages in the Sungai Seluang and Naga Lilit subdistricts yesterday.
Kulim District Civil Defence officer Captain (PA) Amirul Aliff Ahmad said the PPS at Masjid Al-Muhtadin in Sungai Seluang was opened at 10pm, sheltering 186 evacuees.
Another 39 victims were moved to the PPS at the Naga Lilit KEDA settlement, which began operating at 4am today.
The affected areas include Kampung Sungai Seluang Atas, Kampung Sungai Seluang Bawah, Kampung Bukit Sarang Ayam, Kampung Siam, Kampung Titi Tok Aris, Kampung Paya Serdang, Kampung Batu 7 Padang Serai, Kampung Balik Bukit and Kampung Naga Lilit.
"The evacuees comprise 66 adult men, 73 adult women, 35 boys and 48 girls. We also recorded three infants and 23 senior citizens," he said in a statement today.
A total of 47 personnel from multiple agencies were mobilised for rescue operations.
Weather conditions have since improved, and river water levels are receding.
Separately, another PPS at SK Permatang Tok Dik was activated at 5am today. The number of evacuees there is being updated.
"Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and urge residents to remain vigilant and adhere to all safety instructions," Amirul said. - NST
