Daughter of jailed Sabah politician to contest his former seat on KDM ticket

The daughter of jailed former Sabah minister Peter Anthony will contest his old seat in Melalap, as Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) released its initial list of candidates for the forthcoming state election.

Priscella Peter, 27, who is now serving as KDM’s acting president, has been named the party’s candidate for Melalap, a constituency her father held for two terms before he was convicted and imprisoned earlier this year.

Her selection marks a rare instance of a direct family handover in Sabah politics and comes at a moment of uncertainty for the party he founded.

KDM yesterday announced 39 candidates, one short of the 40 it had earlier promised, adding that discussions were still ongoing over the last seat.

The list reflects broader changes within the party following Peter Anthony’s conviction. Senior figures have repositioned themselves ahead of the polls, including Kota Marudu MP Wetrom Bahanda, who is shifting from Bandau to contest in Matunggong.

The move is seen as an effort to consolidate KDM’s influence in the northern Kadazan-Dusun belt, where Wetrom has cultivated a strong grassroots following.

The party has also drawn in several high-profile entrants. Veteran Sabahan artist Abu Bakar Ellah will stand in Kuamut, while former DAP representatives Poon Ming Fung and Liau Fui Fui will contest in Tanjong Papat and Elopura, respectively.

Their departures from DAP follow internal frictions within the party’s Sandakan bloc, which resulted in resignations earlier this year.

Priscella’s (above, centre) candidacy sets up one of the more closely watched contests of the election.

While she inherits the party machinery her father built, analysts say it remains unclear whether Melalap voters will transfer their support to a new, relatively untested figure.
