Internal communication error behind battery issue, Perodua says

Perodua claims that there had been an “internal miscommunication” regarding the battery rental requirements for its first electric vehicle, QV-E.

Referring to their terms and conditions document, Perodua president and chief executive officer Zainal Abidin Ahmad stated the misunderstanding occurred specifically in the syariah compliance clause.

“We had no intention of imposing syariah-compliant requirements on customers when using our vehicles,” he said in a brief statement.

Perodua did not elaborate further on the matter but instead attached the “correct terms” for everyone’s reference.

Under the battery rental plan, buyers are required to pay a nine-year lease with a monthly rental of RM275, excluding the eight percent sales and service tax (SST).

Using the syariah-compliant operating ijarah concept, Perodua must guarantee the battery’s health at 70 percent or above, failing which the company will replace it at no additional cost.

Model unveiled

On Dec 1, Perodua unveiled its first electric model, the QV-E, setting its retail price at RM80,000 before insurance and without the battery.

The debut aligns with the company’s broader efforts to advance a sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem.

According to the New Straits Times, the EV’s battery will instead be leased to owners under a “Battery as a Service” (Baas) scheme.

However, sections of the Baas document sparked confusion online, prompting questions from users about whether owners would be subjected to syariah compliance requirements.

Perodua has since updated its Baas disclosure sheet, removing the clause that required the vehicle and battery to be used solely for syariah-compliant purposes. - Mkini
