PN calls for nationwide prayers over Taki's potential 'suspension'

Perikatan Nasional has urged a nationwide solat hajat to be held at 8pm today, demanding justice for chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan, who is facing a parliamentary motion calling for his suspension.

Although there is no confirmation if and when the motion will be tabled, the move has provoked staunch criticism from PN MPs, who gathered at a press conference in Parliament today in solidarity with the PAS secretary-general.

“At 8 o’clock tonight, everyone in Malaysia who sympathises with our plight is urged to collectively perform solat hajat together.

“May Allah bestow his truth and justice towards this case that is happening right now. We have nowhere else to go, except to turn to Allah through our prayers.

“Tonight, we will do it across the whole of Malaysia and across the world, if we have (sic) (overseas supporters),” said Bagan Serai MP, Idris Ahmad.

According to today’s Dewan Rakyat order paper, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had proposed a motion demanding Takiyuddin’s suspension from Parliament for six months, due to his remarks on the Rusila mosque incident in September.

The motion is scheduled as the eighth parliamentary order of the day, after the second reading of six bills, including the landmark Anti-Bullying Bill 2025, which has since been passed.

However, until the motion is debated and successfully passed, no parliamentary action can be taken against the Kota Bharu MP.

‘Similar, unfortunate fate’

At today’s press conference, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal also lamented that Takiyuddin was bound to meet a similar, unfortunate fate as his own.

“In 2024, I was suspended for six months because the government at the time wanted to pass a bill concerning the privatisation of MAHB (Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad)… perhaps if I hadn’t been suspended, the government would have failed to pass the bill, concerning the privatisation worth billions of ringgit.

“So this is proof that there is definitely a conspiracy here… what is happening right now is very unfortunate for the state of democracy in Malaysia. But, we will keep fighting to the end, to defend the Kota Bharu MP’s dignity,” he stressed.

Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin also described the move as a “tyranny of the majority”, highlighting how it was a reflection of the government acting solely in its own interests.

He also questioned if the move was meant to silence critics, and portrayed it as the government’s failure to fulfil the various “reforms” they initially pledged.

“What I am so angry about today is, why must such a motion to suspend the chief whip for six months even be considered? Masya-Allah, are you all so afraid of him, or what?” he quipped.

Questioning the basis of Saifuddin’s motion, he also reminded that the subject had initially been “settled” between both parties, where Takiyuddin and the home minister had mutually resolved the matter in Parliament on Oct 30.

Further, Hamzah reminded that the PAS secretary-general’s initial comments were merely concerning the standard operating procedures (SOP) on military training, with no intent to spark fears or controversy.

‘Double jeopardy’

Takiyuddin himself said he has been put in an unfair position of being in “double jeopardy”.

He recalled how Pakatan Harapan MP Suhaizan Kaiat had also proposed his referral to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee, urging disciplinary action over his Rusila mosque remarks.

However, Takiyuddin highlighted that he is still awaiting further action regarding the matter.

“Until today, I have not received any decision regarding Pulai’s motion. So why are you now so quick to propose another motion, this time, immediately urging my suspension?

“What even are the conspiracies and motives behind the government’s plan to suspend me from Parliament?” he questioned.

On Oct 22, Takiyuddin had previously claimed that the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) had conducted an exercise at the Rusila mosque on Sept 19 - an action he compared to the 1985 Memali incident, where a occurred after the police tried to arrest PAS leader Ibrahim Mahmood and his followers.

In response, Saifuddin described the remarks as “misleading”, while also undermining the credibility of MMEA and tarnishing their reputation. - Mkini
