Shafie denies claims Warisan tried to lure assemblypersons

Warisan president Shafie Apdal has rejected allegations that his party attempted to buy or entice assemblypersons, calling it baseless and contrary to the party’s principles.

Shafie stressed that Warisan’s conduct remained anchored in integrity and respect for Sabah’s democratic mandate.

“I firmly deny the claim that Warisan is attempting to buy or entice assemblypersons.

“Our commitment has always been to integrity, and leadership must be earned through the trust of the people,” he said in a statement today.

The former Sabah chief minister also thanked voters who backed Warisan in the state polls, saying their confidence was “deeply valued” and carried a responsibility the party took seriously.

“We respect the mandate of the people and the democratic process that guides our state.

“We will continue to fulfil the role entrusted to us with dignity, consistency and an unwavering dedication to serving Sabah,” he added.

Winning the popular vote

Warisan succeeded in securing the highest number of votes as a single party - 288,703, compared to the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition’s 286,389 - winning 25 out of 73 seats.

The party also won the popular vote across all seats.

However, it fell short of forming the government, with GRS securing 29 seats and gaining support from BN (six seats), Upko (three), Pakatan Harapan (one) and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (one).

Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), which won two seats and Perikatan Nasional (one seat) had offered their backing to GRS.

However, Star later decided not to join the administration and remained in the opposition despite one of its lawmakers, Ishak Ayub, being appointed as an assistant minister.

Star president Jeffrey Kitingan justified the decision by saying that Ishak’s appointment was Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor’s decision and not a result of party negotiations.

Earlier, a news portal claimed that Shafie had been in discussions with BN leaders and five independent assemblypersons at a hotel in Kota Kinabalu.

According to SabahKini2, it claimed Shafie and a local businessperson were attempting to orchestrate a buy-over of elected representatives, allegedly offering RM10 million per person. - Mkini
