'Amateur hour' on both sides: Khairy slams 'useless' opposition, 'ostrich' govt

In a blistering assessment of the current political landscape, Khairy Jamaluddin has declared it "amateur hour" on both sides of the political divide at a time of mounting global and domestic issues.

Besides highlighting the global energy crisis caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Khairy (above) also pointed to recent claims made by businessperson Victor Chin, who is embroiled in the “corporate mafia” scandal, as he faces a money laundering probe.

Yesterday, Chin alleged that he had given RM9.5 million to a PKR MP after the latter promised to address issues the businessperson faced in relation to the “corporate mafia”.

Claiming he paid RM9.5 million on Oct 18 last year, Chin threatened to expose the lawmaker’s identity if the funds were not returned by March 30.

Khairy argued that despite the stage set for the opposition to “shine” in ensuring proper check-and-balance measures amid such crises, the bloc is “just too stupid and incompetent” to leverage on the opportunity.

“We really do have the most useless opposition right now…hoping to win by default is not a strategy that inspires confidence,” the former health minister warned in an Instagram Story uploaded today.

“You say you’re an aeronautical engineer, but you literally have no opinion on anything substantial,” he said in an apparent reference to Perikatan Nasional chairperson Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, who holds academic credentials in the field.

The most recent statement from Samsuri was issued last Sunday, in which he urged the government to establish a forum akin to the national consultation and intervention council with representation from various stakeholders, amid rising crude oil prices due to the conflict in West Asia.

Neither Samsuri nor other top opposition leaders have publicly commented on Chin’s claims.

Last week, Khairy submitted an appeal to rejoin Umno - three years after the party expelled him.

Who is the MP?

The application, however, does not seem to have hindered Khairy’s outspokenness, with the former MP not mincing his words in criticising the government.

He shared an image of an ostrich with its head buried in the sand with the caption: “Global energy crisis. Government MP accused of receiving millions in bribes.

“Let's keep quiet and hope no one notices because it's Raya season.”

Khairy also questioned who could be the PKR lawmaker implicated in Chin’s allegations, asking: “Who supported this person to become an MP at the last election?

“Don’t be too holier than thou right now when you are out of favour,” he added.

In a press conference today, Human Resources Minister R Ramanan denied claims linking him with the RM9.5 million worth of funds from Chin, insisting that he had never met or heard of the businessperson.

Accusing former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli of enabling the spread of such allegations against him, Ramanan alluded that there is no need to highlight the issue to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the PKR president.

“I don’t have to speak to him (Anwar) - I’m the party vice-president… with the current state of the world economy, the prime minister has got bigger things to worry about than this,” he said. - Mkini
