Malaysia’s rise by four positions to rank 13th in the Global Peace Index 2025 is attributed to a 6.4 percent decline in index crime and an additional 9,000 security operations conducted at borders and nationwide, said Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail today.
Khalid (above) said the achievement reflects the effectiveness of coordinated efforts by enforcement agencies under the Home Ministry, including the police.
“Although there were several incidents and events that drew attention during the study period from March 2025 to March 2026, the overall security level in this blessed nation remains good and under control,” he said.
Khalid said this while speaking at the 219th Police Day Commemoration celebration officiated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Police Training Centre today.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, Deputy Home Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah and Chief Secretary to the Government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
The Global Peace Index 2025 saw Malaysia ranked 13th among the most peaceful countries in the world and second in Southeast Asia.
Challenges facing the cops
Elaborating, Khalid said the police are now facing the challenge of ensuring the force remains relevant as the nation’s premier law enforcement agency in meeting the government’s aspirations and public expectations.
Citing the attacks on the Pinggiran Subang police station in Selangor in 2017 and the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor in 2024, which claimed the lives of police personnel, he said such incidents show that there are still parties bold enough to challenge the law and national authority, and that these acts also constitute an affront to enforcement institutions.
He stressed the need to upgrade infrastructure at critical premises and amend existing laws to make them more progressive and aligned with current needs.

Meanwhile, Khalid also expressed appreciation for the government’s continued commitment and tangible support for the welfare of police personnel, including a total allocation of RM12.063 billion for the force this year and RM200 million to expand service networks and information technology facilities at police stations and residential quarters nationwide.
The Police Day, themed “Polis dan Masyarakat Berpisah Tiada” (police and community are inseparable), is celebrated annually on March 25 to commemorate the contributions, sacrifices, and dedication of police personnel in maintaining national security and public order.
It also marks the historic establishment of the police force on March 25, 1807, in Penang, following the Charter of Justice.
