PETALING JAYA:
Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) has become the first Malaysian university to enter the global top 10 in Petroleum Engineering, as the country records its strongest performance in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

In the 16th edition of the rankings, Malaysia achieved an 18% net improvement in subject rankings, ranking highly in seven subjects out of the 14 entries in the global top 50.

UTP topped the Malaysian tables with a 9th-place ranking in Petroleum Engineering, up from 16th last year, marking Malaysia’s highest-ever subject ranking.

It also emerged as the most improved university in the Asia Pacific region and second globally among narrow subject tables.

UCSI University led Malaysia in Arts & Humanities, breaking into the top 50 in Music, Performing Arts, Art & Design, and Hospitality & Leisure Management.

Universiti Malaya remained the country’s most represented institution, with 40 entries, including 18 in the global top 100, and notable achievements such as 34th in Petroleum Engineering, and 93rd in Mathematics, marking Malaysia’s highest-ever position in the subject.

Other institutions performing strongly include Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (Architecture, Electrical Engineering), and Universiti Sains Malaysia (Pharmacy & Pharmacology).

QS notes that Malaysia’s progress reflects reforms under the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015–2025, continuing under the 2026-2035 plan, with an emphasis on industry collaboration, research quality, and specialist training.

“Achievements by institutions such as UTP and UCSI University show how targeted investment in specialist disciplines and industry-linked research can translate into global impact,” QS senior vice-president Ben Stower said in a statement

“As Malaysia advances its ambition to become a regional education hub, these results signal growing international recognition of the country’s universities.” - FMT
