Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today assured Malaysians that the country’s petrol and diesel supplies remain stable despite the ongoing conflict in West Asia and mounting pressure on global energy supply chains.
He said the government also remained committed to maintaining the subsidised RON95 petrol price at RM1.99 per litre.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said Malaysia’s good relations with several countries, including Iran, had helped ensure smooth oil supply flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
“Our good ties with Iran have helped ensure sufficient oil supply so far, at least until July.
“Diesel supply is also stable now, although there were slight disruptions earlier with diesel not being available, and the price went up a little as insurance costs and shipping charges have also gone up.
“However, RON95 remains at RM1.99,” he said at the handover ceremony of sacrificial cattle to Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency at the Seberang Perai Tengah District Mosque today.
Also present was Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Anwar said the government had introduced various assistance measures, including the Budi Madani programme, to help farmers, fisherfolk, tractor operators, school bus operators, and the transport sector cope with rising diesel costs.
Talks with Iranian president
Meanwhile, he said Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to contact him at 6pm today to discuss the latest developments following tensions in West Asia.
“That good relationship has helped us. When Iran was attacked by the Zionist regime, we expressed our sympathy.
“Later, when we faced difficulties with our oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz, we became among the first to be allowed to pass through the strait and arrive in Pengerang,” he said.
Anwar added that Malaysia remained grateful that the country’s fuel supply situation was still under control compared to several neighbouring countries, including the Philippines, which is facing more serious pressures.
