'Anwar billboards political, local councils mustn't get involved'

Local government councils should not be involved in partisan politics, and must not allow billboards with political messages, Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said today.
Billboards with political messages should only be allowed during an election campaign period, Nur Jazlan told reporters at the Parliament lobby.
“Local councils shouldn’t play politics. By right, no local council should allow political billboards,” he said.
Nur Jazlan sais this when asked on why the police yesterday took down at least three billboards on the campaigning for the freedom of jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, even though the billboards were approved by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ).
Nur Jazlan said the police acted under the Police Act, and not on instruction from the local council.
“Local councils cannot approve political billboards. Why should they be involved in politics? Police will act against inappropriate billboards,” he said.
Local council members are not elected but appointed by the state government, based on a list submitted by political parties in the ruling coalition.
