Anwar to represent himself in RM100m suit against Nalla

Former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will represent himself in his RM100 million defamation suit against Malaysian United Indian Party (MUIP) president S Nallakaruppan at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Tuesday.
According to Anwar's former lawyer Latheefa Koya, the hearing is scheduled to be conducted before judicial commissioner Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab until Friday.
“The notice for Anwar to represent himself was filed on Friday (yesterday),” she said.
The last session for this case was on Nov 15 last year, after Anwar was cross-examined by Nallakaruppan's lawyer, Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.
Under cross-examination, Anwar denied he or his intermediaries had received instalments amounting to RM60 million from gambling firm Magnum 4D.
With the session resuming, Anwar is expected to cross-examine Nallakaruppan, after the former PKR supreme council member gave his defence testimony.
Anwar filed the suit after Nallakaruppan had claimed giving the money to him when he was the finance minister and deputy prime minister. The MUIP president made the comment before the Permatang Pauh by-election in 2008.
It was reported earlier this month that Anwar, who was the deputy prime minister and PKR de-facto leader, had also sought to defend himself in his suit against Umno-owned Utusan Malaysia at the Federal Court.
However, the suit had been taken off from the case list scheduled for March 4.
This came after Anwar was restricted to only one hour with his lawyers per week.
N Surendran, who was one of Anwar's lawyers, had said the amount of time was inadequate as the jailed opposition leader was involved in 16 ongoing cases. -Mkini
