Former premier Dr Mahatahir Mohamad's decision to drag Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to court is "shocking" to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Azalina Othman.
Mahathir and two others today filed a suit against Najib for malfeasance and failure to uphold fiduciary duties.
"I am shocked but not surprised," Azalina told reporters in the Parliament lobby, adding that she would issue a press statement on this later.
Meanwhile, Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said Mahathir has the right to take the prime minister to court.
He said as a taxpayer, Mahathir can sue any public officer he believes is not doing his duty.
"Anyone can sue a minister or a public officer who does not fulfill their duties properly. (For example) if they abuse their powers. The ordinary citizen can sue.
"Any citizen, as long as they pay tax - and everyone pays tax - has the right to do so. He has the locus standi to do so," said the Gua Musang MP, who is known as Ku Li, when met in Parliament.
