Bar has stake in how AG conducts himself

YOURSAY | 'If politicians can make laws, why can't lawyers who give life to such laws question...?'
Bystander: Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) deputy vice-chancellor Noor Aziah Mohd Awal is confused.
The Bar is not just a body to register lawyers, but also to ensure that the executives must not deviate from the country's laws.
Does she think the attorney-general (AG) is God? She must remember the AG, like herself, is human, and being one, can be fallible too.
P Dev Anand Pillai: Perhaps this learned academic should also know that it is the business of lawyers to be involved in the administration of the country, because the process of law and the practise of it inevitably calls for one to do just that.
Policies are made by politicians who are also called lawmakers, so if they can make law, why can't lawyers who give life to such laws question and debate it?
Babylon: Noor Aziah, going against a questionable AG is not taking the opposition's side. It is taking the side of the good and righteous.
This has nothing to do with politics.
Negarawan: Indeed, it is Noor Aziah who should leave her job and run for political office. Malaysia is beleaguered with serious miscarriages of justice due to the subservience of the judiciary and the AG to Umno.
The Malaysian Bar has not only the social, but moral responsibility to put a stop to these injustices in the interests of the rakyat. Going by the suggestion of Noor Aziah, the Bar will be relegated to another useless 'rubber stamp' body.
This is what Umno wants, so that it can continue with its abuse of power unabated, and this hints at Noor Aziah's own political affiliations.
ACR: One wonders what these academics learn in the UK (she is a LLB and LLM from the UK) when studying jurisprudence, equity, public administration, legal systems and frameworks, etc.
It is no coincidence that great leaders in history were lawyers for they instinctively recognise injustice, the rights of individuals and citizens, and what good public administration and rule law are about.
This is also the reason the Bar as a professional body has to have its voice heard on matters concerning government and the legislature. The public looks to the Bar to tell them the impact of various legal issues has on the people.
What we do not require are silly setups like Muslim Lawyers Association or religious-based political parties. Professional bodies and political parties have a stake in public administration. Why should they proffer a religious slant, especially in a nation like ours?
Anonymous #12566075: Noor Aziah is apple-polishing the BN government. The Malaysian Bar is an independent body defending justice and law in the country. It is not a political party, nor are its members politicians.
It criticises the BN government for administrating unlawful practices and for acts against the constitution. They are not politicians, but a body concerned with the nation's development.
Malaccan: It is because of academics such as these that we see the decline in our nation. This deputy VC is truly deserving of the title 'professor kangkong'. This academician is one of the more stellar nincompoops who plague our universities.
She does not even understand the purposes of the Bar, and this is illuminated in her claim that any lawyer needs to be licensed by the Bar.
To follow her call, each segment of society must remain within its own silo, much in a feudalistic society of a century ago. Because that is where her mindset belongs.
In other words, no one is to speak up when wrong is done. Then for all that is holy and good, then why is she commenting on the Bar? Nincompoop par excellence, this one.
Speak For All: Please Noor Aizah, stick to your academic work purely and not politics. Otherwise please by all means join Umno if you are so interested in their affairs.
Roguekiller: Noor Aziah, you call yourself learned, but you are actually biased. The Bar is actually trying to right the wrongs. They are not leaning towards to any party.
You should concentrate on your own profession; don't you realise the standard of new graduates is far below par? It is because you people can't do your jobs well and only try to support the politicians.
HaveAGreatDay: What about academicians like you, Noor Aziah? Hiding under the coconut shell and pretending all is rosy with this country of ours?
The Bar comprises citizens of our nation - what's wrong with them passing collective judgement on an allegedly unprofessional judicial officer?
Hopeful123: Noor Aziah did not do her homework. And I suppose it would be okay for her if the Bar was in full support of Umno-BN.
Alfanso: Noor Aziah is a product of the New Economic Policy (NEP). Being head of an education institution, but still naive about simple things - the mind has apparently not extended beyond basic thinking. What a shame.
Smallbigblob: She is probably hoping for a promotion. Likewise, may I suggest that you quit your academic profession and join Umno. -Mkini
