An online petition in support of the Citizens’ Declaration has garnered over 32,000 signatures two days after it was launched last Saturday.
Activist Azrul Mohd Khalib who drew up the petition said more and more Malaysians were in support of the declaration as evident by their signatures.
He said the petition entitled ‘Petitioning Prime Minister Dato Seri Najib Razak To Quit’ aimed to secure 100,000 signatures.
Acknowledging how detractors claimed that those calling for change were merely a 'minority', Azrul questioned what would be the magic number, then, before the authorities responded to the calls for change and reform.
“We tell them to give us the number so that we can work hard to get those signatures.”
Arguing further that the petition was a form of democratic expression, Azrul called on MPs to sign the petition too.
“(MPs must also) speak out against the continued mismanagement of the country in Parliament on behalf of their constituents.
“We cannot, must not and will not stand silently by.”
Last Friday, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin as well as various leaders from the opposition and civil society signed the Citizens' Declaration to urge for the resignation of Najib as premier.
