DAP: Hello MCA, your state chairperson also not a Penangite

Penang MCA has been chided over its remarks that the appointment of DAP Seremban MP Anthony Loke as director of Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) was an insult to Penangites.
State DAP Socialist Youth publicity secretary Wong Yuee Harng said it is the MCA which has no talent since its state chairperson is not from Penang.
“We wish to remind the MCA that the Penang Port Commission’s chairperson was Dr Chua Soi Lek; he is not a Penangite, and hails from Johor,” said Wong in a statement today.
“The MCA state liaison committee chairperson Ong Ka Chuan (photo) is also not a Penangite, does this mean that MCA does not have any members who are talented in Penang to lead the party?” Wong asked.
“Why hasn’t state MCA Youth chief Michael Lee protest against their appointment before?” Wong further queried.
Wong was referring to Penang MCA’s deputy leader Tan Teik Cheng who said that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was a Johorean who grew up in Malacca, while Penang DAP leader Chow Kon Yeow was from Kuala Lumpur.
“And now they favour a public representative chosen by people in Seremban to help manage our hill. This is ridiculous,” Tan was quoted as saying by news portal Free Malaysia Today on Sunday.
Loke is replacing PKR Kebun Bunga assemblyperson Cheah Kah Peng as director of PHC after he was sacked for reportedly reneging on his decision to vote out an Umno motion on reclamation at last November’s state assembly sitting.
Cheah and Bukit Tengah assemblyperson Ong Chin Wen were dropped from their directors posts as Lim felt that he had lost confidence and trust in their leadership.
Wong said Loke (photo) is qualified to hold the PHC director’s post as he often debates about culture, tourism and communications in Parliament.
He added that Loke intends to focus on the area of tourism in Penang, therefore his appointment as one of the PHC directors is a “good and appropriate move” as the latter has done much research on the field.
Wong said the PHC director post is without salary, and Penang will not face any financial burden due to this appointment.
He added that Penang Hill is a spot which attracts loads of tourists annually, which is why the state government wants to focus on developing tourism on the hill.
“The state government, after much consideration, has decided to appoint Loke because it feels that his contribution would be beneficial to Penang,” he added. -Mkini
