PETALING JAYA: Kapit will cease to be an “island” once a major road connecting Kapit, Song and Kanowit to Sibu is completed in 2018, the Borneo Post Online reported today.
Sarawak Land Development Minister Dr James Masing said the project would provide a better “community” for the people in the three districts.
“By then (2018), Kapit will no longer be an island. You and I — we can drive all the way to Sibu or Kuching,” he said at the closing of the government’s ‘Sejiwa Senada’ programme in Kapit.
Masing also said a RM 1.4 billion road, spanning 73km and connecting Kapit to Putai and Sungai Baleh, would be built. He said the project was in the process of being tendered out.
Meanwhile, in Saratok, state Social Development Minister William Mawan pledged RM100,000 for the reconstruction of a suspension bridge across Sungai Budu, which is in his constituency.
During a flash flood on Sunday, the old bridge had snapped, cutting off access and forcing the closure of a primary school – SK Ulu Budu.
