The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has opened an investigation paper into the rental of a bungalow by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, which has been alleged to be linked to corruption.
This is relation to a complaint that it received over the matter.
"MACC Penang today has received a complaint on the issue of the purchase of a bungalow by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, with the address at No 25 Jalan Pinhorn, Penang, and a statement from the complainant was recorded on the matter," the commission said in a statement.
The anti-graft body, however, clarified that its investigation is only about the rental of the bungalow and not about its purchase.
"MACC wants to explain that the case is a new allegation and the commission has never opened a file on the matter prior to this.
“MACC's investigation is only about the rental of the house and not about its purchase," the statement stated.
MACC also reiterated that it always hold to the principles of independence, professionalism and transparency, and will guarantee to investigate each and every complaint and information that has elements of corruption without fear or favour.
Earlier today, the media reported that Lim has been accused of renting and purchasing a property at Jalan Pinhorn in George Town at a price which is lower than the actual market value at the time.
Yesterday in the Dewan Rakyat, BN lawmaker Shabudin Yahaya has alleged that the house, which was purchased by Lim on Oct 25 last year, was bought for RM2.8 million, way below the market value of RM6 million to RM6.5 million.
Some have also hinted that it may be part of a kickback deal.
Shabudin also alleged that Lim was renting the bungalow at a cheap rate.
Lim has denied all the allegations and has challenged those who accuse him to meet him face to face.
Lim had rented the bungalow after he decided not to use the residence provided to him by the state after becoming chief minister. -Mkini
