Umno parliamentarian Nazri Abdul Aziz has brushed off any such "air of panic” as claimed by DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang, over Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s decision to summon BN MPs to his official residence last night.
Lim - in a statement today - said that there is now an air of panic in Putrajaya as a result of the Citizens’ Declaration which was signed by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad and several notable opposition and NGO representatives.
He added that this was why Najib had summoned BN MPs for the pre-council meeting, which had - in the past - been held on either the eve or the morning of the new parliamentary session, not two days in advance.
Nazri, however, told Malaysiakini that it’s normal practice for BN parliamentarians to have the pre-council meeting before the start of Parliament.
“It has been done for so many donkey years.
“When you know nothing, don’t talk. It only makes you look stupid,” said Nazri to Lim.
Stressing that the declaration had not been discussed at all, Nazri noted that the matter was not even important.
“Don’t be so perasan (don’t flatter yourself). The meeting only lasted 20 minutes,” he said.
Mahathir - together with former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin - last Friday joined several dozen opposition leaders, BN rebels, and civil society figures in signing the declaration urging Najib to be removed from power by all legal means possible.
Since then, there has been speculation that last night’s pre-council meeting was in response to the signing of the Citizens’ Declaration. ---mkini
