Parents cry foul over drowning of teen in school pool

Family of the deceased is questioning the circumstances surrounding the drowning of their athletic 17-year-old son in only 182 cm of water.
DrowningPETALING JAYA: The family of a 17 year-old in Seremban are crying foul after the athletic youth drowned in only 182 cm of water at his school’s swimming pool, last month.
The Malay Mail Online reported that 176 cm-tall Daniel Abdul Razak, an able swimmer, was found motionless at the bottom of the pool at SMK King George V (KGV) on February 26.
“He also played rugby and football. I find it difficult to accept that he drowned at such a depth. It just does not add up,” the deceased’s father Abdul Razak Udin, 55, told the portal.
According to him, neither the police nor the school authorities had officially informed them about their son’s cause of death.
The drowning also allegedly happened when at least 10 other students were present at the vicinity of the pool to decorate the area for the school sports day the following day.
Abdul Razak also questioned how teachers were not at the pool to supervise the students at the time their son drowned.
According to the report, Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon visited the school on March 1 and ordered the pool to be closed indefinitely until safety procedures had been reviewed.
His ministry has received a preliminary report on the incident and officials are awaiting a post-mortem report from the hospital.
