Shahrir Samad leaves politics with a whimper

YOURSAY | ‘You end your term of service with a big black spot on your integrity.’
Ipoh Pp: Johor Baru MP Shahrir Samad, your going is no loss to us. Once I held you in high esteem. But you have sold yourself and lost your way after RM1 million came your way.
Please leave DAP leader Lim Kit Siang out of the equation. You are not fit to be in the same room with him or breathe the same air.
CQ Muar: Shahrir, rest assured you won't be missed. I'd bet majority of Johoreans and those from other states will be celebrating your intention to call it a day.
To all of us, you are nothing but a "wet blanket" and a disgusting opportunist; as the saying goes: "An ill wind that blows nobody any good".
Thinking Citizen_1403620863: It is so sad that you end your term of service to the people with a big black spot on your integrity. So it is with politics that if one does not take care of himself, no one will do it for you.
What you did to take care yourself is understandable, but to defend such a team of leaders who are mercenaries, without integrity and downright dishonest who are leading the country to ruin - which indirectly affect the Malays - is really something we did not expect of you.
Odysseus: After admitting to receiving RM1 million from PM Najib Razak, he realised that receiving donation is not a glorious thing that his boss has made it to be.
He knows his days are numbered. It’s better for him to quit than to lose face in GE14.
Vent: Hmmm... no wonder they say “discretion is the better part of valour”. He's shrewd enough to quit before the going gets even tougher.
He only has his own safe and speedy exit in mind. The talk about new blood is the usual Umno drivel served up to hoodwink the Umno youth agitating in the wings.
Ferdtan: Shahrir, you started on your political journey on the right foot, you were daring enough to challenge the then powerful PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad; but along the way, you turned out to be a big disappointment.
What had happened to the altruistic young politician who had won many Malaysians’ hearts in the early years of your political life?
You were a hero but now you have lost the one thing we hold dear - respect. You ended your career with a zero.
Anak JB: As an ‘anak’ JB, my view is you have completely disregard your conscience and your principles to become another sycophant, subservient to your political master who have accorded you his donation.
You have sold yourself to the devil, so to speak. I think you retired at an opportune time knowing very well you can no longer hold on to Johor Bahru.
Mushiro: It is fitting that Shahrir is quitting - but as an unsuccessful politician. He never did achieve his goals in politics and finally had to forgo his principles to succumb to the spoils of leadership.
6th Generation Immigrant: Shahrir, you were at one time the poster boy for Malaysian politics. The apex of your career was when you took on Mahathir, at a time when many were unhappy with him.
Malaysians supported you sincerely because of your stature and your honest stance. But then you accepted a huge sum of political funding from Najib, and you fell from grace from that point on.
You were not the same Shahrir anymore. So do not even think of quitting, just quit or else you shall be shamed and voted out by the very people who voted you in.
LifesBlessing: University of Nottingham student Cassandra Chung, in a world where money speaks loudest, you represent the inner hope of the many.
Some brave enough to voice, others silently wishing so. Congratulations on the effort taken.
Anonymous 2402161456903763: The motion won't be debated. The portrait is that of famous people that attended the university, and for Nottingham to remove it one must have extreme circumstances.
Najib is neither convicted felon nor a deposed PM. He is still PM, and 4,826 signatures is not enough. This is laughable.
Anonymous 759201436321741: The battle is lost and won. The fact that such a motion had been allowed to be tabled due to pressure from other members of the PM's alma mater demonstrated he is not above among his peers (fellow graduates).
Anonymous #40112563: I think Chung and Notthingham University students should be congratulated for their participation in the debate on the motion, which is far more mature than what happens at our Parliament where relevant motions are often denied, not to say given a chance to be debated.
Maybe our Parliament should also adopt this way of allowing important motions to be debated based on a certain percentage of public support.
GE14Now!: His picture may still adorn many walls but his image is no longer in our hearts. Our perception of him is a power hungry, greedy, corrupt, thieving person who is not fit for the high office that he holds.
This man is a shame to the country, a crying shame. And his merry band of goons who seek to find all sorts of means to exonerate the unpardonable merely makes us despise him more. -Mkini
