Speaker drubs 'clever' Kit Siang over remarks on royal speech

DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang's remarks regarding the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's speech has incurred the wrath of Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia.

Acknowledging that His Majesty's speech during the opening of the Parliament session is prepared by the government, he stressed this is the Agong's government and he is also the head of the House.

"If a veteran lawmaker says this is the government's speech, it raises several questions. First, has he breached the ethics of a parliamentarian? These are the things that need not be said.

"How are the people going to perceive this? Is he trying to be clever? Is he trying to insult the intelligence of Malaysians that everyone does not know? Is he saying that Tuanku (Agong) is lying?" he told a press conference.

"I think he is the most clever person in the world," he added.

Lim had described the Agong's speech which, among others, called for the continuation of the current administration as being prepared by the government.

Following this, three police reports were lodged against the Gelang Patah MP.

Yesterday, Lim said he would not backtrack on his remarks and reiterated the opposition's support for the monarchy.

"I'm only stating the constitutional position in a constitutional monarchy and there is nothing (malicious to it)," he added.

Another DAP lawmaker, Lim Lip Eng, lodged a counter report on the matter. -Mkini
