KUALA LUMPUR: Cheap liquor is making its rounds among students in Klang, a PKR lawmaker alleged today.
Kapar MP G Manivannan said to date, he had received reports from four schools in his constituency complaining of the problem, which had been going on for years.
This was the second time that he had taken the matter to Parliament and yet nothing had been done to curb the problem.
“This was going on even before I became Kapar MP. Now, the problem has spread and I am urging the Health Ministry to step in,” he told reporters during a press conference at the Parliament lobby here.
Manivannan said he had notified and pressured the Selangor state government to intervene, but to no avail.
“The problem has gone beyond religion or race. The students are buying this type of cheap, unhealthy liquor and mixing it with Coca Cola so they can drink in their school without being detected.
“If Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam doesn’t address this problem, I will bring samples of these cheap liquor and give it to him so that he can test them himself.
“Then he can decide whether to ban the cheap liquor.”
He urged the government to raid the factories producing and distributing such dangerous products.
