Anwar Ibrahim and his former boss Mahathir Mohamad, last week, finally revealed their secret alliance to oust the democratically-elected Prime Minster of Malaysia. But who are they?
Through British blogger Clare Rewcastle, the pair have spent almost a year claiming that 1MDB money ended up in PM Razak’s bank accounts. Mahathir Mohamad
Mahathir Mohamad is well known for his close ties with business cronies and securing lucrative deals for him and his family. Indeed, under his leadership he was known for ensuring absolute control, launching “the biggest crackdown on political dissent Malaysia had ever seen”. https://en.wikipedia.org/.
Under him, political opposition and activism simply wasn’t tolerated. He detained 106 activists in a single month in 1987. He used the Police Act to break up opposition rallies and, in 2001, banned public rallies completely. https://www.hrw.org/
Al-Gore famously rebuked Mahathir for his human rights record, calling those who protested against him “brave” and repeating the cry of “Reformasi” which Mahathir tried to use to give credibility to his current alliance. http://www.nytimes.com/
He used the Printing Presses and Publications Act (PPPA) to suppress criticism and imprison journalists – a key example being Liam Guang Eng tried for “false reporting” and subsequently jailed in 1995. A decade earlier, in 1986, Mahathir banned the Asian Wall Street Journal, now his biggest supporters, from Malaysia, describing the publication as ‘Jewish owned’.
So absolute was his pursuit of control that when allies disagreed with him, he turned against them and imprisoned them, as he did with Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar Ibrahim
Anwar Ibrahim, founder and former leader of Malaysia’s PKR party, has strong links to extremist organisations.
He founded the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), a US based think tank. As recently as November 2014, he was still referred to as a board member.
IIIT is no dry policy think tank – it has close links to the militant organisation, the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood named IIIT as one of its 29 likeminded ‘organisations of our friends’ that shared a common goal of advancing extremist Islam on the world. The ‘friends’ of the Brotherhood, in a 1991 Muslim Brotherhood document, were described as groups that could help teach Muslims ‘that their work in America is a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilisation from within’
Ibrahim has also close ties and regularly met with Egyptian cleric Yusuf al Qaradawi – named as a ‘sheikh of death’. So strong was their connection, that Qaradawi endorsed Ibrahim in the 2013 elections.
In October 2004, Qaradawi was named in a petition to the United Nations, signed by over 2,500 Muslim intellectuals from 23 countries, aimed at raising awareness on the use of religion for incitement to violence. Al-Qaradawi was mentioned among “the sheikhs of death,” as the signatories defined those who manipulate religion to incite violence, for “providing a religious cover for terrorism.”
Qaradawi is banned from entering the United State of America, the United Kingdom and France. In refusing him a visa, the British Home Office stated that they would not tolerate the presence of those ‘who seek to justify acts of terrorist violence’.
As the former allies lose power and lucrative business deals, they have teamed up again with their attacks on the current Prime Minister. As Mahathir told Dow Jones in September 1997: “Tell the lies many, many times and eventually people will believe.”
