A journey through Kelantan’s complex political landscape

From Mohamad Shafiq Sahruddin

In the recent state election, the heartland of Kelantan, renowned for its rich cultural tapestry and historical significance, has once again illuminated its unwavering commitment to its political origins.

The aftermath of the state election not only provides a window into its distinctive political panorama, but also ignites contemplation about the indelible sway of its historical identity as the “Paris of Malaya”.

This transition from the erstwhile political regime of Barisan Nasional to the rise of PAS, assuming the mantle after 1990, serves as a dynamic backdrop to Kelantan’s political evolution.

Nestled on the eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Kelantan has perpetually inhabited the centre stage of Malaysia’s political narrative.

Its moniker, the “Paris of Malaya,” while once associated with illicit activities, mirrors the tumultuous journey towards transformation and reform.

Recognising the imperative for change, the late Tok Guru Nik Aziz Nik Mat embarked on a quest to navigate Kelantan towards a new era. Thus, from a past defined by unsavoury activities, emerged a renewed Kelantan – one embracing Islamism and intellectualism, culminating in a fortified citadel of conservative politics.

The recent state election reverberates with echoes of Kelantan’s distinctive political trajectory. In the face of alternative political avenues, the people have exhibited an unwavering allegiance to PAS.

The crux of the matter lies in the question: Amid the winds of change, what anchors the Kelantanese to their political principles?

A pivotal factor lies in the intricate interplay between historical lineage and political devotion.

The legacy of the “Paris of Malaya” era has indelibly etched itself on the collective consciousness of Kelantan’s society. The reminiscence of a Kelantan characterised by progressiveness and forward-thinking continues to reverberate, even as contemporary politics lean towards conservatism.

This stark contrast between historical memory and present-day politics forms a multifaceted emotional connection to PAS – an attachment that PAS strategically leverages to sustain its dominion.

Moreover, the political architects within PAS have adeptly tapped into local sentiments, positioning themselves as custodians of Kelantan’s cultural and spiritual heritage. This narrative harmonises with the values and identity cultivated over the years.

By intertwining their political message with the preservation of Kelantanese traditions, PAS has woven a storyline that resonates with the collective psyche of the populace.

In tandem, the party’s grassroots outreach and community initiatives have solidified its presence at the grassroots level. By offering essential services and support networks, PAS has metamorphosed from merely a political entity to a lifeline – a source of aid and security.

This symbiotic dynamic forges a bond of trust and interdependence, further entrenching PAS’s role in the lives of Kelantanese residents.

For outsiders, the election results might seem perplexing, given the divergence between Kelantan’s historical identity and its prevailing political panorama.

However, the intricacies at play are too intricate to dismiss. The deep-seated link between Kelantan’s heritage, PAS’s astute strategies, and the emotional resonance they conjure coalesce to perpetuate the party’s dominance in state politics.

As Malaysia’s political tapestry continues to unfurl, Kelantan stands as a testament to the potent sway of historical legacies on contemporary choices.

Navigating the delicate equilibrium between nostalgia and pragmatism becomes imperative for comprehending the intricacies of Kelantanese politics.

Only time will ascertain whether this steadfast allegiance remains unwavering, or if evolving currents will eventually sculpt Kelantan’s political panorama afresh. - FMT
