Clan association chairman to be charged with using unrecognised 'Datuk Seri title

MELAKA: An influential chairman of a clan association will be charged at the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here on Tuesday (Aug 15) with allegedly using an unrecognised Datuk Seri honorary title.

Melaka Police Chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zainol Samah said the 68-year-old had dishonestly identified himself in all his correspondences relating to an ancestral temple belonging to the association.

"A police report was made at the Bukit Baru station on Jan 5 by a 65-year-old man after receiving a letter from Registrar of Society (ROS) that the chairman had provided false information of his honorary title that he claimed was awarded by Sultan of Perak," he said on Monday (Aug 14).

DCP Zainol said the suspect was investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and Section 17 of the Offences Relating to Awards Act 2017.

He said the suspect is also the vice-president of the clan's Federation of Malaysian Associations.

When contacted Melaka Commercial Crime chief Supt E. Sundra Rajan said the 65-year-old had made a diligent check on the suspect after the latter had registered his name with the title in the ROS.

He said ROS responded to the enquiry on Dec 23, last year that the suspect had no such title.

Supt Sundra Rajan said ROS Melaka also made a check with Perak state secretary and discovered that the suspect was never conferred such a title.

He added that the suspect is likely to be charged under Section 7 (3) of the Perak Emblems, Titles and Awards (Prevention of Improper Use) Enactment 2016. - Star
