Elmina disaster: Plane veered off path minutes before crash

The light aircraft that crashed in Elmina, Shah Alam, Selangor this afternoon veered off from its original path prior to its fall, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said the sudden diversion happened three minutes after the plane received clearance from the Subang Airport air traffic control tower at 2.48pm.

“According to the (air traffic control) tower, they noticed that the plane had veered off slightly to the side of its original path.

“After giving clearance for the plane to land, the controllers spotted smoke from the tower, coming from the crash site,” Loke told reporters during a press conference at the Subang Airport today.

Also at the press conference were Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan and Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) CEO Norazman Mahmud.

Eight people were on board the Beechcraft Model 390, when it crashed two minutes prior to landing in Subang Airport, this afternoon.

The plane reportedly clipped a motorcycle and a car in the process, leading to at least 10 deaths.

Hussein told a press conference earlier that the remains of the deceased have been sent to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang for post-mortem.

‘Unconfirmed names’

Loke then read out a list of names of the purported crash victims during the press conference.

However, he emphasised that the names he provided were sourced from the flight’s manifest list.

“The police have not identified everyone at the crash yet and they will update once the results are clear,” he added.

Those on the flight were the two pilots: Shahrul Kamal Roslan and Heikal Aras Abdul Azim; and passengers: Kharil Azwan Jamaludin, Shaharul Amir Omar, Mohamad Naim Fawwaz Mohamed Muaidi, Johari Harun, Muhammad Taufiq Mohd Zaki, and Idris Abdol Talib @ Ramali.

He added that the two motorists on the ground who perished from the crash have yet to be identified.

Loke said that apart from the police, the Air Accident Investigation Bureau (BSKU) is also probing the crash.

He said the BSKU is currently searching for the aircraft’s flight data recorder, commonly referred to as a black box.

He also said that due to the ongoing investigation, no immediate action can be taken against any parties at this time.

Hussein added that the authorities aim to finalise the investigation report as soon as they can.
