TV Pertiwi removed from TikTok due to 'misinformation'

TV Pertiwi’s TikTok account (@tvpertiwi_my) was not removed due to instructions from the government but because it repeatedly violated the platform’s community guidelines, it is learnt.

Malaysiakini understands from TikTok that TV Pertiwi’s account was banned due to repeated violations over content that contained harmful misinformation which could cause real-world harm.

It is learnt that some content on TV Pertiwi’s account was earlier removed, an explanation provided, and TV Pertiwi was told that further violations could result in an account ban.

It is unclear which posts had breached TikTok’s community standards.

Same content on different platforms

Yesterday, TV Pertiwi demanded an explanation from TikTok and the government over why its TikTok account was blocked by the platform.

In a statement, it questioned why the same content which it uploaded on YouTube and Facebook did not contravene community standards there.

It said its TikTok account had 60,000 followers and 600,000 likes.

It also started a new TikTok account yesterday, which at press time, is still accessible.

Based in Bangi, Selangor, TV Pertiwi was launched in 2021 and published text and video posts in Bahasa Malaysia.

Its ownership is not published, however, it is speculated to be closely linked to the NGO Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia.

Recently, Communications and Multimedia Minister Fahmi Fadzil guaranteed that no news website will be blocked by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

However, he also said he was not aware of MCMC’s decision to block UtusanTV, a spinoff of the news organisation Utusan Malaysia. - Mkini
