Johor Pakatan Harapan had decided to adopt “Unity leads to compassion” (Perpaduan bawa rahmah) as its theme for the upcoming Simpang Jeram and Pulai by-elections.
This, said the state leadership, was to pay homage to the Rahmah initiatives introduced by the late Salahuddin Ayub when he was the domestic trade and cost of living minister.
Salahuddin introduced various Rahmah programmes such as the Payung Rahmah for the poor, the Jualan Rahmah which sells necessities at below market prices and most notably the Menu Rahmah programme which encourages eateries to place meals at RM5 on their menu, among others.
Salahuddin, 61, passed away on July 23. He was the Simpang Jeram assemblyperson and Pulai MP. He was also once the agriculture and food security minister.
Stabilise and revive the economy
The Johor Harapan leadership said the Rahmah initiatives reflected Salahuddin's good character and commitment towards creating a better Malaysia.
"Johor Harapan hopes that the voters of Simpang Jeram and Pulai will continue to support our candidates to ensure a continuity of the unity government's agenda to stabilise and revive the economy while incorporating the Rahmah initiative promoted by (Salahuddin) in his lifetime."
The statement was issued today following a meeting of Johor Harapan's top leadership in Johor Bahru last night.
Both Simpang Jeram and Pulai are mixed-ethnicity constituencies. While Harapan is the heavy favourite to retain Pulai, Simpang Jeram is expected to be a more difficult race.
Simpang Jeram is located near Muar and Pagoh, which is the home base for Bersatu and Perikatan Nasional leader Muhyiddin Yassin. - Mkini
