Hunt for ex-PM’s son-in-law nothing to do with polls, says Azam Baki

MACC chief Azam Baki said Muhyiddin Yassin’s son-in-law Adlan Berhan was contacted in June and promised to return to Malaysia but never did.

PETALING JAYA: The country’s top graft buster Azam Baki denied claims that the agency’s decision to go after a former prime minister’s son-in-law to facilitate a probe into a government project was related to the state elections.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief said they had attempted to reach out to Adlan Berhan since a few months ago but “to no avail”, Malaysiakini reported.

Adlan is Muhyiddin Yassin’s son-in-law.

Azam said some had questioned the anti-graft agency’s timing in view of the elections in six states which would be held this Saturday.

“We contacted him in June, now it is already August. Whenever my officer called him, he would promise (to return but never did).

“If you are the investigator, how much longer can you wait? It has nothing to do with the elections or whatnot,” he was quoted as saying.

Azam was responding to remarks by Adlan’s lawyer, Baljit Singh Sidhu, earlier today that the timing of MACC’s press release on Monday, issued less than a week before Saturday’s polls in six states, “suggests that there is a political undertone to the entire process”.

Baljit also said Adlan was never arrested or called by MACC for a meeting or to assist in any investigation before he left the country.

MACC had previously said that Adlan and lawyer Mansoor Saat had left the country in May.

The MACC is tracking the duo to assist in its investigation into a project involving the registration, recruitment and storage of foreign worker biometric data at a ministry.

Azam told Adlan to stop with all the excuses and “just come back” after the latter said he would return to Malaysia once “elements of threats and persecution are eliminated”.

Azam also reminded Baljit that the latter had a duty as a legal professional to assist the MACC in its investigation. - FMT
