SERI KEMBANGAN: Muda will hold its internal polls by December 2024, says the party’s secretary-general Amir Hadi.
Amir said it was normal practice for political parties not to hold their inaugural elections immediately following the first year of their existence.
He cited Bersatu and Amanah as examples.
“They didn’t have their party elections after one year. They only held their party elections after three years,” he told FMT in an interview.
“So, we need people to understand that it’s normal for a new party not to have the party elections after one year.”
Amir said he expects the party to conduct its elections “within three years” of its registration.
Bersatu, a splinter party from Umno, was set up in 2016 and held its first party polls in 2020. It was scheduled to hold party elections again this year but postponed them to focus on the upcoming six state elections.
Amanah was founded in late 2015 by former leaders of PAS who were defeated in the party elections that year. Its first party elections took place in 2019.
Amir said Muda needs to address several important tasks before it can conduct its internal elections.
These tasks, he said, included cleaning up their membership database, establishing an internal election system and setting up committees at three levels – central, state and Parliament. - FMT
