Part of building collapses: Vehicles crushed, no fatalities

A portion of a commercial building in Kuchai Lama, Kuala Lumpur, collapsed on Tuesday night, crushing 10 vehicles parked on the street below.

The building is Block A of the Sri Desa Entrepreneur’s Park where Seputeh MP Teresa Kok’s service centre is located.

According to Brickfields OCPD Amihizam Abdul Shukor, police received a report of the incident at about 10.40pm and arrived alongside first responders from the Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department, and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

He said found the beam of the five-storey building has fallen and damaged the buildings below, but no one was trapped underneath.

“We have yet to ascertain the cause […] We have taken preliminary measures to close the area and relocate whatever is necessary, pending a report from other authorities regarding the building’s safety.

“We urge people to avoid the area and refrain from any speculation because we have yet to have clear details on what happened tonight,” he told reporters at the scene.

While there are yet to be any official reports of injuries, Kok told reporters that she was informed several victims have gone to a nearby clinic to seek treatment for their injuries.

“(The doctor told me) several patients came to ask for their wounds to be bandaged. It was only then (the doctor) realised what happened at the back of the building,” she said.

Her service centre is located on the fourth floor of the building, but she and her staff had already left long before the incident occurred.

Asked what has transpired, she said she was made to understand that the building’s gutter has fallen down at about 10.15pm, dragging other portions of the along with it to the vehicles below.

To a question, she denied a media report that the incident was caused by renovation works at her office.

“No, there was no renovation at my office,” she said.

The report has since been removed.
