Post-state polls: Public holiday for 5 states

Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu get a public holiday today following their respective state elections, while Negeri Sembilan and Selangor will have theirs tomorrow.

Of all the six states that held their state polls yesterday, only Penang does not give an extra public holiday in conjunction with the election.

On Friday, caretaker Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor announced that the state will get a public holiday today if Perikatan Nasional wins the state election.

For Selangor, its caretaker Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari also made a similar announcement promising a public holiday for the state on Monday if Pakatan Harapan-BN front wins.

The caretaker menteri besars of Terengganu and Kelantan, meanwhile, had announced a public holiday for the state to facilitate voters and Election Commission workers, irrespective of the outcome of their respective state polls.

Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu are among four states in Malaysia that use the Friday and Saturday weekend system, as opposed to Saturday and Sunday as practised by the rest of the country.

Meanwhile, the public holiday for Negeri Sembilan was announced by its caretaker menteri besar Aminuddin Harun last night after Harapan-BN secured a two-thirds majority.

"I wish to announce that Monday will be a public holiday for Negeri Sembilan.

"I hope we can get some rest in the next one or two days, and after that, we will start working to serve the people of Negeri Sembilan," he told supporters, as quoted by Astro Awani.

The six state polls yesterday saw the Harapan-BN coalition manage to keep its three states - Penang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan - while PN also retained Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah. - Mkini
