More people have left flood relief centres and gone home as floodwaters receded in five states most affected by the northeast monsoon.

Less than 900 people remain at relief centres in Kelantan (240); Kedah (255); Perak (121); Melaka (17) and Johor (229), according to Bernama.

Three more relief centres were closed in Kedah today, and five in Johor, leaving seven centres still open in Segamat and one in Batu Pahat. Only two centres remain open in Perak and two in Melaka.

So far, nine people have died in the annual monsoonal floods which began in mid-November. At the height of the floods, more than 100,000 were evacuated in nine states.

However, despite the improving weather, the meteorological department has forecast a second wave of flooding expected next week. - FMT
