Oriental Kopi has abandoned its plan to increase service charges during the upcoming Chinese New Year.
In a Facebook post last night, the popular restaurant chain apologised for its earlier announcement regarding the planned service charge hike during the festive period.
"We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused over the past few days. During this Chinese New Year, our service charges will remain unchanged, and no adjustments will be made.
"We are committed to providing you and your family and friends with the best dining experience during the festive season," it said.
On Monday, Oriental Kopi announced that its service charge will be increased from 10 percent to 15 percent during the first and second day of Chinese New Year, which falls on Jan 29 and 30.
This triggered a public uproar, prompting Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah to question whether the increase in service charges was reasonable and allowed under the law.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry subsequently reminded the public that customers could lodge complaints with the relevant authorities if they discovered restaurants increasing service charges during festive periods.
