'Trivial matter': PN to take down posters featuring 'lifetime' Umno member

AYER KUNING POLLS | Perikatan Nasional has no qualms about taking down campaign material for the Ayer Kuning by-election which drew backlash over the use of a BN man's image without consent.

Calling it a trivial matter, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad suggested that PN's opponents find better avenues to attack its Ayer Kuning aspirant, Abd Muhaimin Malek.

"If there is truly a disagreement (over the posters), we can take them down and apologise.

"If they don't want us to use (the image), it's not a problem, we'll just take down (the materials),” the Bagan Serai MP told a press conference at PN's operations centre in Bidor, Perak.

Idris (above) was also confident that PN had not committed an offence under the Elections Act 1958, adding that the materials were designed without any ulterior motives.

He said when a candidate is pictured during his visits with the people, it is normal for photos to be taken to promote their candidacy, following which captions will be utilised to boost the candidate's image.

Idris noted that a person's political affiliation is not determined during such sessions.

"The person designing (the campaign materials) doesn't know anything...sometimes (a candidate) will even 'salam' a 'tok imam' from Pakatan Harapan," he added.

Police report

Meanwhile, in a video circulated on social media, a man claiming to be the individual depicted in the poster stressed that he is a "lifetime" Umno member.

The man, who identified himself as Suhaimi Ismail, stressed that his images were used by PN without his consent.

He also pointed to a police report on the matter - lodged by his wife on April 13.

Muhaimin, who is also the Tapah PAS chief, had earlier downplayed allegations against him concerning the non-consensual use of the man's image, instead saying he is open to making friends with everyone.

Ayer Kuning voters are set to cast their votes on April 26, with Muhaimin part of a three-cornered battle for the Perak state seat under the Tapah parliamentary constituency.

He will be going against PSM deputy secretary-general Bawani KS and Tapah Umno secretary Yusri Bakir. - Mkini
