KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud has denied any involvement, either his own or his wife's, in the tragic death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir, who fell at SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan in Papar.

Describing the allegations made by the Members of Parliament for Indera Mahkota and Kota Baru during today's Dewan Rakyat sitting as baseless, he said: "Such claims not only mislead the public but also unfairly tarnish the reputation of someone no longer in public service.

"My wife, Cikgu Rosnih Nasir, is the former principal of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha Limauan, Papar. She served at the school from March 20 to Nov 22, 2024 before retiring fully from the education sector.

"Since her retirement, she has had absolutely no involvement in the administration or management of the school, either directly or indirectly," he said in a statement.

The Sepanggar MP added that the incident involving the late Zara Qairina occurred between July 16 and 17, nearly eight months after his wife's retirement.

"Any attempt to link my wife to this incident is slanderous and a form of baseless political manipulation," he said.

"My family and I call on all parties to uphold the principle of tabayyun — to verify facts before issuing statements or making accusations.

"Stop exploiting this tragedy for political mileage. Respect the ongoing police investigation and refrain from spreading slander that could harm the reputation and emotional well-being of innocent individuals."

Mustapha also conveyed his condolences to Zara's family, expressing his hope that they will find strength in seeking justice for the 13-year-old. - NST
